From Discovery to Deployment: Why Materials Verification is Critical to Accelerating Innovation

Advanced materials are critical to solving some of society’s biggest challenges, enabling more sustainable products, resilient infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and novel defence technologies. Yet translating promising materials from discovery into widespread industrial adoption remains a persistent challenge. Technical performance alone is rarely enough. Industry requires confidence that materials will perform as expected, at scale, over time and within real-world operating environments.

This talk explores why verification is becoming an increasingly important enabler of innovation. Rather than being viewed as a final-stage validation activity, verification should be considered an integral part of the innovation process, providing the trusted evidence needed to accelerate investment decisions, reduce scale-up risk and increase the speed of adoption.

Gareth will introduce the Materials Verification Programme (MVP), a collaborative initiative developed from a long-standing vision shared by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and the Henry Royce Institute. As part of the National Materials Innovation Programme (NMIP), MVP is helping to build the frameworks, evidence and capabilities required to support the translation of materials innovation into industrial impact.
